The financial impact of the USS changes (a good time to recruit a colleague)

6 February 2018

The UCU recognises that asking members to take fourteen days of strike action is without precedent. ÌýYour union is taking this action to defend your pension from the most serious attack that is has faced.

The strike action has to be concentrated in this way because there is very little time left, up until June, to halt the implementation of the proposed cuts. And pressure applied early is more effective than pressure applied late.

If the proposed cuts go through members will lose between £4,300 to £7,000 per year worked (depending on their salary), around 10% of salary (in some cases more). We would have to strike for one month a year to lose the equivalent in pension value being taken from us.

This is the time to recruit your colleagues. The more members that the more effective our action will be.

Those able to do so are encouraged to to support colleagues. On strike days volunteers will be collecting money for the fighting fund at public transport termini around the Bloomsbury area.

Nationally, in recognition that some will face real hardship, the UCU will be making available a limited . Note that the fund will not provide strike pay as-such (to replace lost salary) and assistance for colleagues on insecure contracts and / or low earnings will be prioritised. No payments will be made from the fund for the first four days of strike action.

Colleagues facing financial hardship may also seek assistance from the who provide financial advice and can refer those in need to non-commercial specialist organisations.
