21 May 2024

The International conference “Languages and Cultures in Times of War: (Im)possible, (Re)imagined, (Un)manageable” took place at the UCL SSEES and the IAS on 2 - 3 May 2024.

Attendees of the Languages and Cultures in Times of War: (Im)possible, (Re)imagined, (Un)manageable conference

The conference explored the impact of wars on culture, communication, and languages. It delved into topics such as wartime communication, cultural propaganda, language and culture policy during war, translation and interpreting in wartime, and the preservation of art and cultural heritage. Notably, the current Russian invasion of Ukraine and the Palestinian-Israeli conflict were discussed alongside historical contexts like the Yugoslav and Vietnam wars, as well as World War I. The conference was co-organised with Justus Liebig University of Giessen (Germany), Uzhhorod National University and Ukrainian Catholic University in Lviv (Ukraine) and received support from the UCL Global Engagement Funds, FRINGE, PROLang, Culture and Society in contemporary Russia, and Ukrainian Institute London.
