Dr Marco Davare, of the Sobell Department of Motor Neuroscience and Movement Disorders at the UCL Institute of Neurology, has been awarded the Magstim Young Investigator Award 2008 for his work studying how the brain controls skilled hand movements.

Dr Davare's research aims to improve understanding of these motor mechanisms in order to help people with neurological conditions who have difficulties carrying out everyday tasks involving their hands. Using transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) to induce transient 'virtual lesions' in healthy volunteers, he is looking for a direct causal relationship between a 'lesion' of a precise part of the brain and its role in controlling movement performance.

Magstim produces stimulation and monitoring equipment to investigate the human nervous system. The company sponsors the Young Investigator award, alongside a poster award, for research related to magnetic neurological stimulation and intra-operative nerve monitoring. The awards were announced at the Magstim TMS Summer School 2008, held in London at the end of May.
