An Open Learning Centre was launched at 1-19 Torrington Place on 3 July 2003.

Open to all UCL staff, the centre provides support and training in IT across the range, from novice to advanced users. This initiative is just one aspect of UCL's approach to the development of staff IT skills.

The centre has the latest computers with large flat-screen monitors, a colour printer and a scanner, all of which can be used for independent self-paced learning. Staff can also drop in for help from skilled advisors in a wide range of common software packages or to get assistance with particular information management problems.

More specialist support in areas such as the use of IT in teaching and learning, and advanced web and database development can also be provided by appointment. Those interested in gaining an accreditation in IT can receive guidance from the centre in working towards the European Computer Driving Licence.

Staff are invited to visit and try the facilities or to book an appointment for a specialist session.

The centre is intended to meet the needs of staff for whom timetabled training courses are not appropriate or cannot be conveniently fitted into busy schedules. A parallel development is the creation of online training materials which staff can access over the web at any time, as an alternative or supplement to 'conventional' courses in the UCL Staff Development portfolio. The centre is in Room B07 of 1-19 Torrington Place and is open from noon to 6pm Mondays to Thursdays, and noon to 4pm on Fridays.
