Description

In the context of globalisation, international schools are experiencing growth in number and size. London alone is a home to 15 international schools offering places to over 20,000 pupils.

January 2023 data released by International Schools Council shows that: ‘6.5 million children between the ages of 3 and 18 are currently enrolled at international schools around the world: a 53% growth in the market since 2013. In regards to South-Eastern Asia there has been a 23% growth in the enrolment of students in its international schools over the last five years. During that same time, the number of international schools in the sub-region increased from 1,600 to 1,940. The field research conducted by ISC Research suggests this is due to a rise in both enrolments of host nation students, as well as expatriates who have moved to the sub-region because of new development by multinationals, foreign businesses and start-ups.’

Many students doing the TESOL Pre-Service MA are interested in pursuing their careers in international schools. This module is designed to provide participants with knowledge and understanding of practice models focused on bilingual learners in international schools. Participants will also gain wider insights into key concepts and principles underpinning international education and globalisation: global citizenship, intercultural and transcultural ethos, plurilingualism.

The aims of this module are to:

  • Provide students with knowledge and understanding of key concepts underpinning mission and ethos of international schools;
  • Provide students with insights into models of practice employed to support bilingual pupils from non-English speaking backgrounds;
  • Provide students with knowledge and understanding of language development across the curriculum;
  • Provide opportunities for students to experience working with bilingual pupils in international schools.

By the end of this module students will be expected to:

  • Demonstrate critical understanding of key concepts from module work and devise arguments about their relevance for working in international schools;
  • Demonstrate engagement with models of practice in an analytical and critical way supported by relevant research and theories;
  • Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of current practices employed to support language development of bilingual pupils in international schools;
  • Demonstrate independent and creative thinking in developing their own vision for further development of good practice in international schools.

Many students who do this module pursue a career in international schools and they get in touch to say that they are enjoying their work and that this module has helped them a lot in getting their jobs and doing their work. If you are interested in exploring a possible future career in international schools, this module will be an excellent preparation for interviews and for working.
