Description

This is a project-based module that provides you with an opportunity to critically investigate the spatial characteristics and qualities of the built environment, with a focus on density and urban form, and explore the spatial composition of new urban tissues and use of different typologies and densities in the development of urban design proposals.

Ìý

It is an introduction to the essential elements of urban form and the concepts of density, and aims to develop an understanding of the spatial structure and the different scales and dimensions of the built environment, and how these contribute to the qualities of space, as well as developing analytical and graphic skills. It also provides an opportunity to apply the knowledge and structuring principles acquired to the practice of design and spatial composition, and test typologies and densities in a specific urban context. To summarise, it aims to foster design experimentation, critical thinking and evaluation capacity, and a creative approach to the redesign of urban form to make high-quality spaces that can respond to the needs of the density optimisation debate and the wider sustainability agenda.

Ìý

This module is taught primarily through project and design-based work. Knowledge is imparted through individual/group tutorials, project reviews, and lectures (delivered by the staff and external academics and practitioners).
