The module aims to provide students with an introduction to social research, giving them an understanding of the design principles of social research, and the various forms that research can take, including ethnography, action research, surveys, experiments and case studies. Students will learn how to search for, organize and critique research papers, and gain an awareness of the contexts in which social research is undertaken, the institutions that fund and produce it, its social impacts and uses, its relation to other forms of social knowledge, and its systems of ethical governance. The module will discuss the formulation of research questions and writing literature reviews for research proposals.
