Description

In the decades after the Second World War, Soviet culture – the unique cultural formation of the USSR – achieved its greatest reach, while also facing its greatest challenges. This module has a two-fold purpose: to examine the history of the postwar USSR through the prism of Soviet cultural production, and to analyse the evolution of Soviet culture itself as ideology, politics, and institutions.ÌýÌý Topics include:Ìý the cultural cold war; de-Stalinization and intelligentsia identity; the mass media boom as everyday culture and politics; Soviet youth (sub)cultures; underground and unofficial cultures; language and cultural nationalism. A solid background in general Soviet history is strongly recommended.
