Description

Why do people move? When do governments permit immigration and when are they not? How effective are they in preventing unwanted immigration? What explains citizens attitudes towards immigration and immigrants? How does immigration affect citizens' political behaviour? Do immigrants increase unemployment and lower social trust? What works against prejudice and discrimination? Is there are a trade-off between liberal immigrant policies and immigrant integration? We will address these and other big questions in this module on immigration. Covering the seminal and recent literature, we explore what social science has and has not learned about the causes and consequences of immigration in North America, Western Europe and elsewhere. Students will be exposed to a variety of research and an emphasis will be placed upon using quantitative evidence to evaluate theoretical arguments.
