The aim of the module:
The aim of this module is to convey an overview of the strategic management of construction projects. The skills and competencies obtained through the module will equip students in leading complex construction projects, teambuilding and strategic thinking.
Learning Objectives:
- To analyse construction projects from a strategic owner perspective
- To critically evaluate the interfaces between different firms involved in project organising
- To evaluate the processes from the strategic front-end to the operational back-end of leading construction projects
- To consider the nature and role of project leaders in delivering projects successfully
- To apply knowledge into the ways construction projects create value for society as a whole

Module content:
Day 1: Projecting the modern world. Discussion of projecting the future, the importance of projects and projecting.
Day 2: The three domains of project organising. Critical evaluation of construction projects and its strategic management and leadership.
Day 3: Leading in project organising. Project leadership model and discuss the role and importance of project narratives.
Day 4: The owner domain. Different capabilities of owners that impact successful delivery of construction projects.
Day 5: The supplier domain. Different capabilities of suppliers that impact successful delivery of construction projects.
Day 6: The delivery domain. Project domain in project organising, and how to lead and manage construction projects throughout the project lifecycle.
Day 7: The governance interface. Governance in projects, the approach to governance to foster innovation in projects.
Day 8: The commercial and resource interfaces. Commercial and resourcing interfaces in three domains of project organising.
Day 9: Project narratives. Exploration of what are project narratives and why these are important. Critical evaluation of narratives by promoters and protesters and how to manage them.
Day 10: Group presentations and preparation for coursework.
