Description
This is a compulsory module for all students studying the MSc Periodontology (distance learning) programme.
The contents of this module will include (but are not limited to):
- Indications and required criteria to enrol a patient into the corrective phase of therapy
- Fundamental concepts of surgical periodontal therapy of periodontal diseases
- Presentation of different types of periodontal surgery including: open flap debridement, resective and regenerative techniques
- Practical skills associated with flap design, flap elevation, surgical debridement and suturing techniques
- Post-operative management of the surgically-treated patient
- Interdisciplinary aspects (periodontal/prosthodontic therapy) as part of surgical periodontal management
- Expected short and long-term outcomes following surgical periodontal therapy
On successful completion of the module, graduates will have achieved understanding and knowledge of:
- Systemic and local indications and contraindications to enrol a patient into the corrective phase of therapy and referral pathways
- Decision-making process: surgical vs. non-surgical management
- Concepts of surgical therapy of periodontal diseases
- Evidence supporting the choices of different surgical techniques
- Understanding of different types of periodontal surgery including: open flap debridement, regenerative techniques and resective including surgical crown lengthening procedures
- Surgical instruments and indications for their use
- Flap design, flap elevation, surgical debridement and suturing techniques
- Post-operative management of the surgically-treated patient
- Factors affecting the healing following different surgical procedures
- Interdisciplinary aspects (periodontal/prosthodontic therapy) as part of surgical periodontal management
- Expected short and long-term outcomes following surgical periodontal therapy
