Description

This module aims to provide knowledge and understanding of fundamental principles of soil mechanics and engineering geology, and to teach how to use these principles in civil engineering practice.

Learning Outcomes

  • Understand the basic principles of engineering geology
  • Apply geological understanding to analysis of sites
  • Describe and classify porous soils and calculate basic properties
  • Understand the importance of water and apply the effective stress concept
  • Analyse steady state water flow through soils
  • Apply basic Mohr Circle to soil mechanics
  • Problem solving skills
  • Laboratory and field skills
  • Presenting information textually and graphically.
