Description

Aims:

The module aims to:Ìý

  • Introduce students to software engineering and product management principles with specific reference to the financial services industry.ÌýÌý
  • Provide students with hands-on experience through tutorials, lab practical sessions and case studies.Ìý
  • Capacitate students with expertise to understand what effective software engineering and product management techniques are.

Intended learning outcomes:

On successful completion of the module, a student will be able to:Ìý

  1. Explain the principles of software engineering including agile software development, requirements gathering, prototyping and client/server architectures, and evaluate their applicability in different product management setups.
  2. Plan, design, and deliver simple software engineering processes.
  3. Identify the wider issues that form the background to developing software systems at financial services organisations and propose potential solutions.
  4. Apply the principles of product management including scrum implementation and product life cycle management (PLM) to fintech products.
  5. Allocate, organise, and assess work within a multi-member team for a software development project.

The following is indicative of the topics the module will typically cover:

The module introduces students to the basic principles and skills associated with object-oriented software engineering and product management applied in the financial technology sector. The module will cover aspects such as requirements gathering, user story design, prototyping, A/B testing, scrum implementation, CI () / CD (continuous delivery) practice and client/server architectures. It will provide students with the knowledge necessary to be able to architect, analyse and improve systems effectively, as well as to manage a financial services software during the product life cycle.Ìý

To be eligible to select this module as optional or elective, a student must ​be registered on a programme and year of study for which it is formally available.
