Description
This module will introduce the anatomy, development, physiology and function of skeletal muscles. Building on functional characteristics of muscles, the module will also give you a comprehensive overview of paediatric and adult muscle diseases including muscular dystrophies, mitochondrial diseases, muscle channelopathies, and idiopathic inflammatory myopathies. Translational research conducted at the UCL Queen Square Institute of Neurology and Great Ormond Street Hospital will be highlighted. Disease pathology, pathomechanisms, clinical research and latest therapeutic applications as well as clinical management of muscle disease are also a main focus of this translational module bridging clinical practice to scientific research. Masterclasses will help students to understand the use of imaging techniques, histopathology and electrophysiology techniques in the diagnostic work-up and in the context of clinical trials.
By the end of this module, you will gain an understanding of how normal muscle function is altered in various pathological conditions that affect muscles. You will be able to critically assess muscle function measurements used in the clinical setting as well as have an understanding about current research trends in paediatric and adult-onset muscle diseases. You will also develop writing skills and understand the principles of writing Patient Information Leaflets on muscle diseases through the assignment task students will need to undertake in the course of the module.Ìý
