Module Content
The module falls into 2 parts.
Part I – (first 3 lectures) is a continuation of Part II of PLIN0045. It looks in more depth at pragmatics: the nature of communication, the relation between language and communication, and some recent approaches to the study of communication.
Part II – (last 7 lectures) is project-based and looks in depth at some current topics in the study of meaning.
Teaching Delivery
This module is taught by 1 x 2 hr lecture and 1 x 2 hr tutoial per week.
Indicative Topics
Indicative lecture topics are based on module content in 2023/24, subject to possible changes.
A selection of topics will be covered in theoretical pragmatics, the syntax-semantics interface (e.g. quantification, polarity items, linguistic universals), and/or experimental pragmatics (e.g. processing of pragmatic inferences).
Module Aims and/or Objectives
The intended learning outcomes are: uderstanding of the concepts and issues underlying the indicative topics for the module, ability to form and evaluate hypotheses in semantics and pragmatics.
