Description
The module provides an introduction and critical assessment of resilience as a concept informing risk reduction policy and research. The focus is climate change adaptation and international development and sustainable development. Transformative adaptation and similar approaches that foreground social justice and other systems level changes will be considered and examples of practice discussed. Specific sessions will cover:

- Conceptual introduction
- The antecedents of adaptation
- Social vulnerability and adaptive capacity
- Views from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change
- Contrasting resilience, transition and transformation in climate change adaptation and disaster risk reduction
- Evaluation and feasibility of climate change adaptation options
- Case studies from urban and rural adaptation

The lectures will be supported by group exercises to give familiarity with resilience concepts and criticism. Lecturers with experience in or from humanitarian and development agencies will provide an opportunity to scrutinise practice and network for career development. Student-led learning will allow for a wide range of resilience topics to be considered. The module will be taught through lectures and seminars. Lectures will introduce the topic and provide background to situate and contextualise the key themes of the weekly readings. Seminars will provide an opportunity for deeper engagement with the material through group discussions and class exercises of various kinds.Ìý
