Description

This module will introduce you to a variety of approaches to research with and about children. You will be encouraged to take a critical and enquiring stance towards research and research methods and evaluate the methodology in published research.

Content: You will have the opportunity to explore different approaches to research and research design, including quantitative and qualitative approaches. You will be encouraged to reflect on your own assumptions about what academic research is and to consider the relationship between research aims, theoretical frameworks and ethics, and how these shape research design and methods of data collection and analysis.

Teaching Delivery: This module is taught via 10 weekly lectures and seminars. Each week, we will look at practical examples of how different methodological approaches have been applied in research about and with children. Throughout, we will work collaboratively to help you develop the critical and reflective knowledge and skills you will need to plan your own manageable research study and to prepare for the next stages of your individual Dissertation or Report.

Indicative Topics:

  • Quantitative Research Designs
  • Participatory Methods with Children
  • Conducting Ethical Research

(Based on module content in 23/24 and subject to change)
