Description
GEOL0038 Research Proposal encourages participants to think critically about a chosen field of research. The module is designed to help participants prepare for their independent research project by developing their ability to plan research and to write for specific audiences.
Participants are expected to undertake a thorough review of relevant literature and present clearly defined research hypotheses or objectives based on this review. Participants will also suggest an appropriate analytical method (laboratory, numerical, desktop, or field-based) to explore these hypotheses/objectives, together with an outline of the resources required, a structured timeline of work, and an impact statement. For assessment, participants will produce and submit a 3500-word proposal (written report, 80%) and an infographic (15%). The written proposal is be aimed at a scientific but non-specialist audience, so technical content should be clearly explained. The infographic should be aimed at a pubic audience, and so needs to summarise the proposed research project using straightforward language and effective graphics.
Participants will present their infographics to their peers in an informal presentation, giving an opportunity to both give and receive feedback. Presentations will not count towards the final mark, but the quality of peer feedback contributes 5% of the mark for this module.
Learning Outcomes:
- To assess previous work from the literature and identify research needs in your chosen topic;
- To define clear research objectives/hypotheses that have a well-defined scope, address the research needs you have identified, and are achievable in the three months available for an independent research project;
- To plan a structured timeline of work, including resources, costs and time needed. Any research risks (i.e. factors that may mean you cannot complete the research as planned) should also be considered, and mitigation measures suggested.
