Description

Summary

In this module, you will learn how to conduct an independent research project. You will undertake independent original research at a post-graduate level, from start to finish. Thus, you will be involved in the conceptualization, design, preliminary research (e.g. literature review), data collection, analysis, interpretation, writing up and presentation. As an MSc candidate, you will undertake comprehensive, in-depth, original research over a period of several months in an area of particular interest to you. Each of you receives guidance and advice from a project supervisor. Choice of project type includes: Primary data collection, secondary data analysis (analysis of existing data), action plan (literature review and plan for future research/intervention), literature review (critical desk study of existing research). You will attend seminars on dissertation planning and preparation, as well as writing and formatting dissertations.

Learning Objectives and Outcomes

The main learning outcome of this module is to be able to produce, under supervision, a 10,000 word dissertation on an agreed topic or research project.

Who is this module for?

This is a compulsory module for all students on the MSc Child and Adolescent Mental Health.

Teaching and Learning Methods

Teaching and learning will be through one-to-one discussions with allocated supervisor(s) and self-directed learning. You will receive a total of 10 hours individual supervision-some of which is reading and commenting on drafts of the dissertation.
