Aims:
To provide students with the skills necessary to carry out the research component of MSc programmes effectively and successfully.
Learning outcomes:
Upon completion, the students will be expected to have gained:
- understanding of the necessity and principle of research and the scientific method;
- understanding of research methods available and in which domain they are most appropriate;
- understanding of the advantages and disadvantages of these methods;
- understanding of how to manage a research project;
- knowledge on how to carry out an effective literature review.
Synopsis:
This module will provide students with an introduction to research, giving an insight into the underlying principles upon which research is based.
It will then go on to describe the tools and methods used to carry out and disseminate qualitative research. It will include 8 major themes:
- Research Ethics
- What Is Research and How Can We Undertake It?
- Project Management
- Interacting With ‘the Literature’
- Qualitative Data for Engineering
- Asking/ Answering Questions and Constructing Convincing Arguments - Debate and Interview Skills
- Written Presentation Skill
- Oral and Visual Presentation Skill
