Description

This aim of this module is to equip students with the necessary skills to conduct effective, methodical research in a modern scientific environment. Students will undertake the following: Literature survey methods and presentation; Instruction on types and usage of scientific databases; Discussion of the appropriate depth and breadth of analysis of scientific literature; Critical thinking and analysis skill; Basic concepts in modern scientific methodology and their application in the classical phases of the research process; Novelty and research innovation. Discussion of what constitutes novel research and innovation and techniques for identifying novel research paths, from catching breaking research trends to identifying important, unsolved problems in science. Students will be given short projects to identify and then discuss their creative ideas within a framework given by the lecturer. Experimental techniques Statistics, error and data analysis. Discussion of the mathematics used in statistical analysis and their application to data analysis Report writing. Methods of writing concise, clear scientific reports. Short projects to produce academic reports with individual feedback to aid student improvement. Journal writing. An examination of journal styles for the tailoring of paper submission to specific journals. Short projects to produce academic papers with individual feedback to aid student improvement. Presentation skills. Techniques to effective present scientific ideas and data to an audience. It will include presentations from the students on chosen topics with real-time feedback and advice for improvement.
