Description

This module will introduce you to the civil engineering profession. In particular it will introduce commonly used tools, and the professional skillset and behaviours needed to be a successful civil engineer. Specific components will include: introduction to professional practice in civil engineering, critical thinking and problem solving, team working, ethics for engineers, sourcing information and technical literature, visualization, introduction to engineering drawing and sketching, introduction to AutoCAD, introduction to Geographic Information Systems (GIS), introduction to FME, industry standards and professional conduct. All material will be discipline-specific to Civil Engineering. The aim of this module is for you to develop your awareness and knowledge of key professional skills required in Civil Engineering today. You will draw on these skills across a range of activities during your first year, including: Challenges, Scenarios A & B, and the Lampeter surveying field course. The course is delivered by lectures, drawing workshops and software practicals.

Learning Outcomes

  • Ability to plan and record self-learning against a number of key development objectives, linked to the chartership process for civil engineers, laying the foundation for lifelong learning/CPD;
  • Development of knowledge in the main topic areas outlined above;
  • Development of software proficiency in AutoCAD and GIS;
  • Improvement of communication skills through the development of proficiency in technical drawing and sketching.
