Description

In this module you will explore the key principles and concepts of statistics and operational research as applied to healthcare. The module will guide you through the variety of mathematical and statistical techniques commonly used in research to improve the efficiency, productivity and quality of healthcare processes and systems.

At the end of the module you will:

  1. Understand how health data is created and used across the range of health systems
  2. Use basic statistical techniques to describe measures of centrality and variance, distributions, and identify outliers
  3. Understand statistical inference (including p-values and confidence intervals) and how to test hypotheses
  4. Assess the quality and value of data and analysis frameworks
  5. Use linear regression to derive measures that inform decision-making
  6. Identify the barriers to using data effectively in organisations
  7. Design an effective visualisation for complex data
  8. Design a statistical analysis plan for a particular study

The module is delivered through web-based distance learning in the UCL Virtual Learning Environment plus a 3-day face-to-face teaching session.
