Description

Ìý

Content: This module is exclusively for MSc Urban Development Planning course students. It runs over three terms. The module explores the challenges of urbanÌýplanning andÌýgovernance in the context of real cases,ÌýtypicallyÌýone in London and the other in a city of the Global South. It includes sessions in which students will become familiar with and diagnoseÌýspecific planning and / or governance challenges, as well as analyse or develop proposalsÌýdesigned toÌýpromote more socially just urban developmentÌýprocesses and outcomes.ÌýThe module also imparts skills relating toÌýmixed-method research design and delivery, working in teams, facilitation, negotiation, action learning and interviewing.

Typical Teaching Delivery: This module is taught over 9 weekly sessions in Term 1 (a number of which involve London-based fieldwork activities); 9 weekly sessions in Term 2; and a c.two-week overseas practice engagement in Term 3 (followed by a limited programme of post research engagement activities). Self-directed group working requirements run concurrently to organised module activities in all three terms.

Indicative Topics (based on recent module content, subject to possible changes): In recent years, DEVP0030 Practice Engagement Projects have engaged with topics ranging from the use and abuse of public land, the loss of community assets, social impact assessment and youth engagement, to contested urban regenerations, displacement(s)/relocation(s), settlement security and care in the city.

Module Aims: This module is designed to provide participants with:

  • Knowledge and understanding of the key challenges and dilemmas of urban development practice.
  • An awareness of the interests of, and relations between, actors in civil society, the public and private sectors, in the processes and practice of urban development.
  • The capacity to undertake critical reframed diagnoses in the context of urban development planning practice.
  • An ability to develop strategies and well supported proposals which are socially and culturally inclusive, politically and economically viable, and environmentally sustainable.
  • An ability to communicate findings, information and proposals orally and visually, and in formats adapted to diverse audiences.
  • A range of practical transferable skills and tools related to group working, research, analysis and writing at postgraduate level.
