Description
What can we learn about international politics from popular culture? What can we learn about popular culture from the study of international politics? This module engages with debates in the discipline of International Relations (IR) that move away from a narrow, state-centred understanding of international politics, drawing instead attention to the manner in which the work of “international politics” can be found in the minutiae of the everyday, from news reports to street protests, and from airport checks to fashion advertisements. This course focuses on the complex and inextricable relationship between international politics and popular culture, and encourages reflection on the nature of the international/political as well as the nature of IR theory more specifically.
The aims of the module are:
- to introduce some of the theoretical approaches and methods for analysing popular culture;
- to explore the relationship between popular culture and international politics / IR theory;
- to analyse the political / moral / ideological intersections between various popular cultural artefacts and international politics;
- to develop interdisciplinary skills for international political analysis.
