Description

Summary

This module is designed for physiotherapists who wish to explore the principles of the management and care of children with cardiorespiratory conditions. The aim of this module is to draw on the evidence base and provide you with a theoretical understanding of growth and development of the cardiorespiratory system and implications for management, as well developing assessment skills, x-ray and spirometry interpretation, and considerations for paediatric intensive care. You will learn about the specialist physiotherapy management of children of all ages with acute and chronic cardiorespiratory conditions, including the role of exercise, non-invasive ventilation and the management of children receiving long-term ventilation. During the practical workshops you will cover: the theory and practice of airway clearance devices, management of the upper airways, and case studies relating to children with complex histories. You will be encouraged to reflect critically on your own practice and scope of practice within the multidisciplinary team and will be expected to actively participate in discussions, practical sessions, debate and workshops.

Learning Outcomes and Objectives

After completing this module, you should be able to:

  1. Define anatomical and physiological differences between adults and children, and understand the implications of these for physiotherapy practice; understand the way in which the lungs grow and develop during early life and the impact this has on paediatric health and disease
  2. Understand the principles and practice of physiotherapy assessment and treatments of paediatric patients in intensive care. This includes the ability to interpret chest x-rays, an understanding of modes of ventilation and weaning, and the theory and practice of delivering manual techniques
  3. Be familiar with the pathophysiology related to common causes of respiratory distress in the neonate and understand the role of physiotherapy in relation to neonatal care
  4. Understand current concepts in the management of patients with chronic respiratory problems and patients with neuromuscular conditions
  5. Select, justify and apply appropriate airway clearance devices and other appropriate adjuncts to cardiorespiratory physiotherapy treatments, .
  6. Understand the application and use of non-invasive ventilation in patients with neuromuscular disorders
  7. Prescribe appropriate, incremental exercise to patients with respiratory conditions, with an understanding of the physiological effects of exercise in paediatric patients.

Who is this module for?

This is an optional module for the Advanced Physiotherapy (MSc/PGDip/PGCert) and the Physiotherapy Studies (MSc/PGDip/PGCert).

Teaching and Learning Methods

The module will be delivered via a combination of face-to-face lectures, workshops and seminars. Teaching will be facilitated by relevant experts in their field. Online learning activities will be included to support the face-to-face delivery.

Assessment

This module will be assessed by 100% viva examination
