Description

This module begins with a one-week immersive field class in a European city focused on methodological experimentation in social research. It builds on aspects of the second-year courses ‘Methods in Human Geography’ and ‘Urban Geography’. The field class starts by introducing and experimenting with a range of techniques for attending to the social life of cities. These include note taking, observation, participation, photography, and video recording. After returning to UCL, we will then work together with you to explore how the research material that we have gathered can be analysed and drawn upon to develop original and valuable social scientific accounts of everyday life in cities. This culminates in a series of ‘web essays’ that use our field materials to explore a specific aspect of social life in the city that we visited together. The fundamental ambition of this course is to build our skills in responding to the importance of things that might easily go unnoticed.

Students will leave this course with skills in:

  • Team working and creative research design
  • The comparative evaluation of social research methods
  • Project management and interdisciplinary reviewing

Please note that if numbers of students enrolled on the module falls below 10 the module may not run.
