Description
Operations management is the design and management of the processes that transform inputs into finished goods or services. Operations is one of the primary functions of a firm, similar to Finance or Marketing. This course provides a foundation for understanding the operations of a firm by exploring a simple question: How do companies actually do things?
In addressing this question, the course examines how companies can gain competitive advantage through operations and supply chain management by; minimising cost, improving responsiveness, achieving rapid time to market (TTM), and attaining sufficient and responsive capacity. We will then explore the role of technology in achieving these goals by particularly focusing on the implications of emerging tools and technologies (e.g. AI, Machine Learning, additive manufacturing) in managing business operations.
Students will be introduced to essential operations management concepts, analytical tools and frameworks through a variety of learning formats including case studies, video clips, interactive problem solving, group exercises, simulations and directed reading.
