Description

This module delivers an overview of strabismus, neuro-ophthalmology and paediatric ophthalmology. The diagnosis, investigation and management of conditions within these ophthalmological sub-specialties will be covered, with reference to current best practice. The multi-disciplinary nature of these sub-specialties will be highlighted, to give students an understanding of the interplay with other disciplines such as orthoptics, optometry, neurology and radiology. The key link to systemic disease will also be highlighted.

Within paediatrics, areas of study include assessment of vision in children of different ages, refractive error in children, amblyopia, and childhood strabismus. Key ophthalmic conditions such as paediatric cataract, retinopathy of prematurity and nystagmus will be covered.

Disorders of ocular motility in adults will be covered in the strabismus component of the module, including the principles of strabismus surgery, as well as an approach to surgical decision making in patients with strabismus.

The adult neuro-ophthalmology component of the module will give students an understanding of the diagnosis and management of important, as well as urgent, neuro-ophthalmological conditions, including papilloedema, sight threatening optic neuropathy and painful third nerve palsy. The diagnostic tools used to reach neuro-ophthalmic diagnoses will be covered, including OCT of the optic nerve and the role of neuro-imaging.
