Description

This module aims to enable you to develop a good understanding of issues related to designing natural and mechanical ventilation of buildings in order to provide indoor air quality and comfort within the wider concept of sustainability.

Natural and Mechanical Ventilation in Buildings will give you an introduction to a range of tools and techniques that can be adopted when designing naturally and mechanically ventilated building enabling you to calculate ventilation rates in buildings, define ventilation strategy with due regard for thermal issues and energy demand, and to use dynamic thermal simulation modelling tools to assess and fine tune their design. The importance of performance of ventilation systems and control of such systems in the operation and consideration of relevant issues at the design stage will be addressed. A number of case studies will be introduced to assist the understanding of the concepts, tools and techniques and operational performance. The importance of cooperation of built environment professions for achieving a good performing design will also be discussed.

The module attempts to stimulate critical thinking in relation to sustainable design.

Module learning outcomes:

  • The importance of good building design in the context of sustainability and climate change
  • The relationship between ventilation and building heat gains
  • Natural ventilation design principles
  • Natural ventilation integration with buildings envelope
  • Mixed Mode Ventilation design principles

This module considers the passive and active ventilation of buildings from the viewpoint of reducing building energy consumption at the same time as maintaining a healthy internal environment. The design aspects of natural ventilation and of air supply systems are also considered.
