Description

‘Movement science and pain’ will build on your knowledge of mechanical theory and biomechanical behaviour of individual musculoskeletal tissues to provide you with knowledge and understanding of whole body mechanics and movement. Movement is modified significantly by pain and the fear of pain and you will learn about pain mechanisms, central sensitisation of pain and the management of pain with emphasis on biopsychosocial aspects. Visiting the Pain Management Programme at the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital will complement teaching in the classroom. The module will provide you with knowledge and understanding of the kinematics and kinetics of gait and you will gain practical experience of cutting edge techniques to assess gait inside and outside the clinic. You will learn about neuropathologies and syndromes such as hypermobility that have an impact on gait and movement. You will be introduced to assistive technology devices designed to allow people with mobility dysfunction to regain independence and improve quality of life.
