Microeconomics for Health aims to acquaint you with the techniques and questions that arise in advanced Microeconomic Theory,Ìýas well as its application to the modelling of healthcare markets. The course will make extensive use of multivariate calculus and constrained optimisation techniques.

The module is open to anyone with a 2.1 or above in a quantitative first degree. The module is core for MSc Health Economics and Decision Science students.

This module will provide you with:

1. The relevant microeconomic concepts and tools that are used in the analysis of health care markets.
2. The ability to apply mathematical techniques to microeconomic problems.
3. The ability to apply core economic theory and economic reasoning to policy relevant topics.
4. An understanding of verbal, graphical, and mathematical representation of economic ideas and analysis, including the relationship between them.

After taking this module you should be able to:

1. Have a firm foundation of knowledge about theoretical models and frameworks to understand the workings of economic systems.
2. Be able to apply the theoretical knowledge and verbal, graphical, and mathematical skills acquired to the solution of theoretical and applied problems in the economics of health and health care in a range of settings.
3. Be able to developÌýsimple models and frameworks to study key topics and policy issues in the economics of health and health care.
4. Have an advanced knowledge and skill base, from which you can proceed to further studies in health economics, related areas, or in multidisciplinary areas that involve economics.

You will be taught primarily through lectures. Tutorials, journal clubs, and problem sets will familiarise you with concepts and techniques through a hands-on approach. Problem sheets will be provided to encourage self-study. Moodle will be used to provide a repository of course materials, and in other ways at the discretion of the lecturer.Ìý
