Description

The module provides a perspective on modern German history through the history of Berlin. It introduces research questions, problems, and historiography of urban history. It takes Berlin as an example for modern urbanisation, studies the impact of the city's growth on living conditions and social structures, and analyses the emergence of modern urban culture. It looks at the changes of Berlin's urban landscape and how it was reflected in depictions of the city. It analyses Berlin's role as Germany's political centre, concentrates on the key events that were played out in the city after the Second World War. We will make use of a wide range of sources: historiographical, autobiographical, and literary texts, but also paintings, photos, films and popular music.
