Description

This module introduces general management principles and their relevance to all aspects of library and information sector practice. During the module we will consider the ethical and legal context of information services. We will consider equality and diversity from the perspective of all library and information stakeholders. We will examine organisational, strategic, financial, marketing and evaluative principles and practice. We will look at issues involved in human resource planning and development, and leadership. Personal management will be at the heart of the module including considering well-being and reflective practice. The importance of analytical, personal and transferable management and communication competencies to meet the demands of a changing professional environment is emphasised.

Learning outcomes: By the end of the module, students will be able to:

  • discuss the purpose and activities of management for information professionals
  • describe ethical, social and legal responsibilities
  • demonstrate an understanding of change management and strategic approach for service development
  • plan and prioritise budget expenditure and resources
  • identify and respond to human resource management issues
  • put into practice key transferable skills including self-management and communication skills essential for information managers

Learning and teaching uses a mixed approach combining:

  • talks from tutors and visiting practitioners
  • preparatory viewing of content on the virtual learning site, in preparation for classes
  • class discussions
  • practical exercises
  • possible group visits - TBC
  • private study
