Description

This module is one of three rotating Life Cycle modules taken in year 5 and comprising core teaching and clinical placements. This particular module includes Psychiatry, Care of the Older Person (COOP), Palliative Care, Cancer Medicine and Ophthalmology.

You will have had exposure in year 4 to patients with the illnesses commonly treated by some of these specialties in particular COOP where you apply your general medical knowledge to the older patient where multiple co-morbidities need to be considered, and in Cancer medicine which builds on your learning about specific malignancies from year 4. Psychiatry builds upon your CPP learning about mental health, and develops specific skills in gathering information from, assessing and managing patients with mental health conditions.

The overall aims of the module are:Ìý

  • to develop your clinical reasoning and diagnostic skills in relation to the core presentations linked to this module;Ìý
  • to understand how the core conditions covered by this module present;Ìý
  • to be able to take a full history, including collateral and social history;Ìý
  • to conduct a clinical examination from a patient with any of these core conditions and presentations, including mental state examination and assessment of patients with mental health concernsÌý
