Content: In this module, we cover the main dementia subtypes and language change associated with each. In lab sessions, we will work with language samples to understand the linguistic profiles of dementia first-hand.
Teaching delivery: This module is taught over ten weekly lectures and five bi-weekly practical sessions. In most practical sessions, students analyze language production of people with dementia (with a focus on lexical, semantic, grammatical, and pragmatic properties).
Indicative topics: Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, primary progressive aphasias, frontotemporal dementias, Huntington's disease, Diagnosis, Treatment, Sppech and Language Therapy, Dementia-friendly environments
Module Aims:
1) Knowledge of dementia types, including behavioural and neurological changes associated with each type.
2. Understanding of issues with language and communication.
3. Knowledge of clinical approaches to dementia, including language-based approaches.
4. Experience with clinical application of language science.
5. Increased sensitivity to societal issues related to dementia.
