Description
This module will introduce the students to the main issues that are going to be addressed in the course, and thus give a critical overview of ideas about historic urban environments. It provides therefore an underlying theoretical framework and also makes reference to significant case studies which illustrate the issues involved. The perspective provided will look both at the situation in London and the UK in detail, as well as exemplars from around the world, looking at past and present cases.
The module aims to provide students with a wide-ranging perspective on how architects, urban designers, planners, urban researchers, geographers and other disciplines have articulated concepts and theories about architectural and urban environments within cities, whether that happens to be in developed western countries, rapidly growing economies, or poorer developing nations. In doing so it also introduces students to the kinds of issues and approaches and questions they will need to tackle when it comes to design-based research in other modules on the course.
