This is a compulsory first year module for SSEES BA Economics and Business (with EE Studies) students and BA History, Politics and Economics students and an optional module for first year BA Politics and Sociology students. We will accept first year students from other UCL departments if spaces are available, particularly first year BASc students on the Societies and Sciences and Engineering Pathway. This module is not open to affiliate students.

This module provides a thorough introduction to contemporary microeconomic theory and its applications.The module concentrates on how individuals, policy makers, and firms can use microeconomic tools to analyze and resolve problems. We will study the theory of thefirm, and explore firm behaviour and welfare analysis in various market settings including perfectly competitive markets, monopoly,oligopoly and strategic interaction between firms. We will also see the sense in which market economies are efficient, and the way governments can make our economy less or more efficient.
