Description
Content:
The module provides a general introduction to eukaryotic and prokaryotic cell biology, cell signalling, developmental biology and virology. Topics will include: Membrane structure and function, cellular organelles, cytoskeleton, cell signalling, cell division, cell physiology, developmental biology, bacterial cell biology and basic principles of virology. The teaching will comprise lectures, supported by Moodle, with lecture slides provided before the lectures. Detailed feedback will be taken at the end of term and fed back into the module delivery and design.
Module Aims and Objective:
At the end of the module students will have a basic understanding of cell and developmental biology, and should understand how prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells function and how they are affected by viruses. The module will prepare students for more advanced modules that they may wish to pursue in Year 2, such as CELL0009 Intermediate Cell Biology: Cell Structure and Function and CELL0010ÌýIntermediate Cell Biology: Cell Signalling and Regulation.Ìý Students will develop independent learning and problem solving.
Teaching delivery:
This module is taught in 20 bi-weeklyi lectures.
Indicative lecture topics:
- Cell biology (6 lectures)
- Cell signalling (3 lectures)
- Developmental biology (4 lectures)
- Bacterial cell biology (3 lectures)
- Virology (4 lectures)
