Description
This module will introduce students to the law of town and country planning, to its use as a tool of environmental management and to central issues relating to the statutory purpose of planning in achieving sustainable development. The module will consider what constitutes the body of planning law and environment law, focussed on the UK context, and the regulatory mechanisms used to manage and structure development and provide forward-looking plans and strategies. Practical issues of decision-making in planning, such as use of planning conditions and planning agreements will be considered alongside the role of environmental management techniques, environmental information access and public participation requirements and human rights legislation in shaping planning practice. Overall, the module will introduce students to the nature of planning as a quasilegal area of professional practice, and the role law and policy have in achieving sustainability.
