This unique third year module is open to students who are eligible to compete in, and have been selected for entry into, one or more international mooting competitions (in 2024–25, only the Jessup moot). Participation in these competitions is enormously challenging but also enormously rewarding for students. The moots involve very significant research and writing, and an exceptionally high standard of oral advocacy. The module will provide a degree of general skills support to students selected for participation, as well as academic recognition for the significant intellectual and time investment involved in mooting at this level.

The module will have two key elements. A taught section of five seminars will focus on mooting scenarios and problems from relevant mooting competitions from previous years, and cover legal research, drafting, advocacy and working cooperatively in a group. The balance of the module will comprise independent study and group work in accordance with mooting competition rules, under the guidance of coaches.

The primary aims of this module are for students to develop skills in legal research, drafting, oral advocacy and collaborative work.

Each student will be allocated an individual mark out of 100 based on their individual performance in the module as a whole, from the time of group selection through to the completion of competition round(s). The assessment will be based on: calibre of engagement in seminars and other activities as required, including responsiveness to feedback and ability to work cooperatively in a group (15%), research and writing of submissions (35%), and preparation and participation in mooting rounds (scope of which may vary having regard to team roles, competition rules and progress through competitions in a given year) (50%).Ìý
