Description

This module introduces students to the main themes of development theory, policy, and practice. It focuses on the factors that enable and hinder efforts to build economically prospered, socially just, and environmentally sustainable societies. The course is divided into two parts. Part 1 discusses key concepts and frameworks in international development and provides a critical overview of major development theories and the principles of development practice.ÌýPart 2 examines some of the most pressing contemporary development challenges such as promoting climate justice, achieving inclusive growth, reducing inequalities, and defending human rights, among others. Lectures provide an overall assessment of the main tendencies and dynamics of the different issues before delving into emblematic case studies throughout Latin America and the Caribbean. Seminars analyse concrete development policies and interventions designed/implemented to address these challenges in particular contexts.
