Description

The aim of this module is to explore the control of infectious diseases in the context of tropical and resource poor settings. Addressing the operational requirements for both service and research delivery we consider the pathogens that have most impact in these settings. The epidemiology, pathogenesis, diagnosis and patient management of key pathogens (e.g. Malaria, TB, HIV, Ebola) is addressed and the diversity of tropical pathogens introduced, e.g. the helminths. The latest developments in diagnosis and management of infectious disease are introduced and adoption of appropriate technology considered, together with an introduction to the tools to monitor the evolution of outbreaks.

Learning outcomes

  • Familiarity with the pathogens affecting communities in resource poor settings; their epidemiology, pathogenesis, diagnosis and patient management
  • The ability to evaluate the risks and requirements of undertaking infectious disease research and/or service delivery in resource poor settings
  • Awareness of the tools and requirements for outbreak investigation and clinical research in resource poor settings
