Restrictions: The module is compulsory for 2nd year BSc. Biomedical sciences students on the Organs and Systems stream, but open to students on other programs in either the 2nd or 3rd year. There are no specific prerequisites, but students who have not done any anatomy or embryology before should contact the module organizer. The module is not available as an option for iBSc students.

Description

Content:

A module of human anatomy, histology and embryology that covers the structure and development of the cardiovascular, respiratory, digestive and urinogenital systems. Clinical and comparative aspects are introduced as appropriate, so as to draw out the relationship between structure and function. This module comprises lectures mainly, but it is hoped that optional laboratory classes can be offered (in the Anatomy Laboratory).听

Teaching Delivery:

This module is taught in 20 bi-weekly lectures, with three optional anatomy laboratory sessions.

Module Aims:

1) To provide a detailed overview of the structure and embryonic development of the human body.

2) To provide a foundation from which to develop an understanding of clinical problems relating to human anatomy and development of the thorax, abdomen and pelvis.

3) To provide a strong anatomical foundation from which to explore issues relating to developmental biology and evolutionary morphology in relation to the regions covered.

The module is open to any interested Year 2 or Year 3 student but is not appropriate for iBSc medical students as it covers topics in the Year 2 MMB module. It helps if you have taken the first year module ANAT0001 Introduction to Anatomy and Development, but this is not essential provided you are willing to put in extra work. Affiliate students and students without any Life Sciences background should contact the module tutor in advance. Year 4 students interested in taking the course should contact the module tutor.

Anatomy of the thorax 鈥� thoracic walls and diaphragm; lungs and breathing; heart and heart development

Anatomy of the abdomen 鈥� abdominal walls and inguinal region; anatomy and histology of the gut tube; posterior abdominal wall and kidneys

Anatomy of the pelvis 鈥� bony pelvis and pelvic diaphragm; anatomy and development of the male pelvic viscera and perineum; anatomy and development of the female pelvic viscera and perineum.
