Description

The global health landscape has witnessed vast change in the past decade, with an emphasis on the importance of power and position within the contexts of unequal environments. Expertise in management of health programmes is increasingly important, particularly in district or regional settings, with the need to manage and deliver programmes in ways that acknowledge and address imbalances of power between communities and organisations. This module introduces key programme design concepts and combines theory and practice, allowing participants to develop insights and knowledge that can be applied in the field. It also gives participants the opportunity to reflect on their praxis in terms of key issues such as anti-oppression and community ownership. Participants examine a range of health management issues, including project financing, human resource planning and the use of data for decision-making, ensuring local participation and ownership, and ethical practice. Students are also taught the logical framework and theory of change approaches to project planning.Ìý

This module and evaluation centres on a simulation exercise of developing a health programme in a resource-poor context. You will work in a team using a Theory of change approach to define and formulate programme objectives within the context of a country's national development goals, working alongside a target population.Ìý

After taking this module you should be able to:Ìý

  1. Acquire the necessary competencies to plan and design a health intervention in a low or middle income country.Ìý

  1. Develop a proposal for an intervention in a resource-poor setting.Ìý

Specific:Ìý

  1. Understand, develop and correctly use aims and objectives, SWOT analysis, stakeholder analysis and theory of change.Ìý

  1. Draw-up a logical framework for a planned project.Ìý

  1. Understand how to develop appropriate tools for monitoring and evaluation.Ìý

  1. Draw-up a realistic budget for a complex health project.Ìý

  1. Understand the roles of leadership and teamwork in the development of a project proposal.Ìý

  1. Understand the importance of sensitive practice when working with local communitiesÌý

  1. Develop a theory of change for an intervention/programmeÌý

The module is open to students on the MSC/PGDip Global Health and Development, other UCL MSc/PGDip students.Ìý
