Summary

This module covers current issues relating to family health and wellbeing in the early years, across disciplines, e.g.

  • ÌýParent and child mental and physical health, including in the context of child illness.
  • ÌýCurrent social policy issues relevant to young children.
  • ÌýMethods and interventions to support wellbeing in families with young children.
  • ÌýImpact ofÌýenvironmental factors (e.g., technology, COVID) on young children and families.

Module Aims

  • To provide an overview of factors affecting health and wellbeing in young children in the context of family and society.
  • To develop an awareness and ability to think critically about these issues for young children.
  • To develop skills in communicating scientific information around this topic to the lay public.

Learning Objectives and Outcomes

After taking this module, you will be able to:

  1. Identify and describe contemporary issues in infant and early childhood developmentÌýaround health and wellbeing.
  2. To be able to select appropriate research methods for evaluating contemporary view/produces/debates in infancy and early childhood development in a family context.
  3. To be able to communicate information and its evidence base on a topical issue to the lay public.

This is an optional module for the MSc Infancy and Early Childhood Development ProgrammeÌýand is available as an optional module on other related programmes.

Teaching and Learning Methods

Teaching will include lectures/seminars, and independent learning as well a number of video/internet learning hours.

Assessment

This module is assessed by the production of a leaflet (1 double-sided A4 page) aimed at lay public and rationale for content of leaflet (1,000 words).
