This module provides an introduction to the key principles and core practices of green and sustainable finance. The first half of the module focuses on the concept of green finance and the urgent need and challenges society faces due to climate change. The science of climate change and the role of the financial system are covered in this section.
The second half of this module introduces green and sustainable products and services in the banking, investment, and insurance sectors, and explores the way in which the finance sector and finance professionals support the transition to a low-carbon world. Examples are drawn from a variety of domains where these products and services can provide value for business and policy.
The module offers an online learning toolkit associated with instant feedback quizzes for students to gain knowledge and case studies of different green finance instruments.
Aims:
The aim of the module is to develop the student’s knowledge, understanding and ability to use the key principles and basic practice of green and sustainable finance. The following are included in the module: climate change and its impacts; climate risks and emerging environmental risks; the evolution of green and sustainable products and services in the financial sectors; realising the role of the finance sector and finance professionals in supporting the transition to a low-carbon world; raising the awareness of the importance of a sustainable society.
Learning outcomes:
1. Understand what is meant by ‘green’ finance and 'sustainable' development.
2. Analyse the nature and importance of key climate, environmental and emerging sustainability risks, and how these can be managed.
3. Critically evaluate the way in which different types of financial service strategies, activities, products and services (including banking, investment and insurance) can support the development of green and sustainable finance, the transition to a low-carbon economy.
4. Apply Fintech in Green Finance to refine the methods and technologies of financial services in order to better analyse costs and efficiency, increase data authenticity and improve accounting accuracy.
