Description

The module provides an introduction to the principles of chemistry as they apply to the natural world. Fundamental concepts of geochemistry will be learned in class lectures and in practical sessions focused on chemical bonding, mineral types and stability, stable and radioactive isotopes, aqueous geochemistry, low-temperature chemical reactions, basic thermodynamics and kinetics. Practical sessions will cement this knowledge and provide students with the opportunity to analyse geochemical data of practical importance.

By the end of this module students will have a sound basis forÌý their subsequent studies in geosciences, having gained basic understanding of how chemical processesÌý govern the composition, stability and flux of natural substances within the Earth system.
