Description
This module examines the changing representations and lived experiences of gender and sexuality in late nineteenth and twentieth-century Britain. It focuses upon key events in history when conventions of gender and sexuality were questioned, and the gender and sexual order thrown into sharp relief. At its core is a consideration of how gender and sexuality illuminate wider issues of power in society, and the way this has changed over time. The module introduces students to theoretical and methodological issues in the histories of gender and sexuality and explores a range of topics in these fields, including key political movements, gendered representations and experiences of war, and changing social trends around the family, employment and sexual behaviour. We will work with a variety of source material throughout the course, including medical and legal sources, personal narratives, films and oral histories.
