Description

This module will explore themes and methodologies in environmental history, focusing on approaches old and new. It will look at longstanding practices in historical geography, their adoption and adaptation by the 'Annales School' and contemporary movements, as well as more modern approaches to climatology, bioarchaeology, and genomic analysis. The purpose will be to introduce students to the rich range of ways in which 'environmental history' can be done. The focus is on medieval European history although some topics will expressly focus on interactions beyond Europe (the Black Death, the 'Columbian exchange'). We will also explore the ways in which this field is likely to develop as the climate crisis establishes a more dominant claim on historical attention.Ìý
